If we will all spend 25 years of our life in a bed, it might better be perfect. The choice of your linens should, therefore, not be done lightly, but how to find your way among all those fabrics?
Choosing quality linens can turn into a real headache. Here are our tips for investing the perfect bed sheets for you.
Choose the right material
Just as a good recipe relies on good ingredients, quality linens are made from a beautiful raw material. With this in mind, it’s important to understand that synthetic fabrics (polyester, viscose, etc.), are certainly more affordable but, sometimes, less comfortable and soft to the touch. It is always better to favour natural materials such as cotton, bamboo or Tencel... The star of bed linen remains 100% cotton known for its robustness, ease of maintenance as well as its breathable and hypoallergenic properties.
The quality of cotton
If the sheet is cotton, it is a good start, it is not enough to guarantee fool proof quality. Some cottons are more likely to age poorly and pilling, others will be rougher. This is explained by the choice of fibre used, the longer it is and the softer and more resistant the fabric will be. Opting for Egyptian or "long staple" cotton is a guarantee of the quality of your sheets.
300 TC, 900 TC, 1200 TC…. What can these indicators correspond to? This is the number of threads used per 1 cm² of fabric. And the higher it is, the tighter the weave will be, which means the canvas will be tough, soft and durable. We advise you to choose at least 900 threads per cm² sheets, this is the standard quality, below you risk sleeping in sheets that are not very pleasant to the touch and likely to last less over time. For hotel quality, we recommend the cotton percale, it is still cotton but of superior quality. The cotton percale is soft, fresh and offers a real feeling of well-being on the skin. Made from the longest cotton fibres, its tight and regular weave gives it great resistance, unparalleled comfort and long life. Also made from a high quality cotton, satin is woven very finely and requires at least 800 threads per cm². Very flexible and soft, the difference lies in the appearance of the cotton satin which offers a brighter finish than the percale, which has a matte finish. This visual difference is due to the way the threads are crossed when weaving.
The finishes of the sheets
Most linens are treated with chemicals like chlorine, formaldehyde or silicone. The goal is to reduce shrinkage or treat the sheets against wrinkling, but these practices have consequences for your health and the environment. To avoid this, it is better to choose Oeko-Tex certified sheets. This label ensures that no chemicals harmful to humans or the environment have been used in the manufacturing process. At Epitex, all of our products are Oeko-Tex and we work exclusively with factories that run on renewable energy.
Why choose Epitex?
To choose the right sheets, it is therefore necessary to take into account all this information: the quality of the weaving as well as the fabric, and the number of threads used per cm².
